Luis
Luis has been helping daily at the soup kitchen since 2012. He used to come with his parents to get food at the St. Francis food pantry and knew Ms. Mildred. He started volunteering then. Luis went to school in New York at William Taft and Evander Childs. He was in special ed and did extra auto mechanic and auto body work. He then worked at a nursing home in the Bronx; his parents owned a grocery store around Fordham University.
He moved to Harrisburg through the help of friends, and he and his dad worked at McDonald’s at the Uptown Plaza mall. Luis says his favorite part about the soup kitchen is walking with neighbors who are unhoused and distributing clothes to people on the side. He also said an important part of his role at the soup kitchen is maintaining order.
Laura
Laura is from Peru and has been in this area for two years. She is in the process of seeking asylum and started volunteering at the soup kitchen because they helped her family. Her husband is a forklift driver.
John Kelly — Kitchen Manager
John Kelly is the manager of the St. Francis Soup Kitchen. A profile photo is on its way; in the meantime, John oversees daily operations, the volunteer schedule, and the kitchen itself. To volunteer or coordinate a food donation, reach the kitchen through the parish office.

The work behind the meal
Prep starts before the doors open; the line forms by noon. These are our volunteers and our kitchen on Market Street — feeding neighbors here since 1981.
